Hickory Veneer

Hickory (Carya spp.) grows in the Eastern United States and Canada.  Divided between the “true” Hickory and the “Pecan” Hickory, the only difference is that one tree bears fruit.  The wood of both species is sold together.  Hickory wood is one of the strongest and hardest woods native to North America.

Hickory heartwood is light to medium brown while Hickory sapwood is a paler yellowish brown.  Hickory veneer that contains both the heartwood and the sapwood creates a rustic appearance known as Calico Hickory.  Hickory has a course texture but is straight grained.  Pecky Hickory contains “bird peck”, where a bird has created a small hole or indentation in the wood and a darkish mineral streak forms.  Hickory veneer can have knots, for a more rustic look, or be knot-free. While the Calico or the Pecky is a classic rustic look for cabinets or furniture, Oakwood Veneer also has uniform colored Hickory for less color variation with all of Hickory’s beauty and strength.

Other names for Hickory include Shellbark Hickory, Big Shagbark Hickory, and Kingnut.

Hickory Veneer comes in multiple sizes from 4’x8’, 4’x10’, and 4’x12’ as well as crossgrain sizing of 8’x4’.  Backers included 10 mil, 22.2 mil (Bubble free), and Peel and Stick (PSA).
