Things To Remember When Sanding Veneer

Sanding Veneer: Essential Tips for a Flawless Finish

When it comes to sanding veneer, precision is key for a flawless finish. At Oakwood, our veneer sheets come pre-sanded, ensuring top quality. However, if you choose to sand for specific reasons, here's what you need to know:

1. Importance of Sanding: Sanding is crucial for optimal staining and appearance. Neglecting this step can lead to blotchy finishes and compromise the integrity of your veneer over time.

2. Sanding Techniques: Whether you opt for an electronic finishing sander or hand sanding with sandpaper, ensure even sanding to avoid inconsistencies in the staining process.

3. Beware of Thin Veneers: With veneers becoming thinner, a single sand through can be costly in terms of both time and budget. Exercise caution to avoid over-sanding and damaging the veneer.

4. Sanding Guidelines:

  • Sand parts evenly to prevent blotchy staining.
  • Use 220 grit sandpaper for preliminary sanding.
  • Always sand with the grain for a smooth finish.

5. Consider Wood Species: Different wood species have varying hardness levels, affecting sanding difficulty. Be mindful of the species you're working with to avoid sanding through the veneer.

Softwoods like pine and fir, are easier to sand through than hardwoods. Some woods that are technically hardwoods, like birch veneer, are still fairly soft. It is easier to sand through a birch veneer panel than through oak, beech, maple, or mahogany - so familiarize yourself with the species and proceed with caution.

 6. Grain Raising Technique: Some species, like walnut, can be tricky to finish. For tricky species like walnut, raise the grain before finishing. This involves lightly dampening the surface with a rag after sanding, followed by re-sanding with a fine grit for a smooth finish.

7. Watch for Warning Signs: Stop sanding if you notice a yellow appearance, indicating you're sanding through the veneer.

By following these guidelines, you'll achieve professional-grade results and preserve the beauty of your veneer surfaces for years to come.
