Finishing multiple species of veneer

Oct 28th 2015

Question:

I would very much appreciate some advice and suggestions on staining cabinet doors with a diamond pattern consisting of walnut and cherry veneers.

What is the best way to mask off the cherry from the walnut and vice versa without the stain bleeding? I have to match the existing finish in a home which requires a stain, toner and multi layers of clear lacquer on the cherry.

Answer:

The only thing we could suggest in addition to masking off the individual sections would be to washcoat each section first to prevent the stain from bleeding. If you’re not familiar with washcoat, it’s nothing more than thinned shellac. You will want to consult a good finishing book for the proper mixing ratio of shellac to thinner. We hope this helps.
