Replacing Sanded Off Veneer

Oct 28th 2015

Question:

Please help: My front door is topped with Oak Veneer. A portion of the veneer towards the bottom on the door has been sanded off. Is there any product I can purchase so I can fill that portion of the door with more veneer?

Perhaps some sort of topical (liquid veneer?) that can be painted on and then stained to match the rest of the door? If not, what can I do aside from replacing the door – which I don’t want to do. I appreciate the assistance very much – Thanks, Liz

Answer:

You can replace just that portion of the veneer with the same wood species but the more difficult part may be getting it to blend in without a noticeable seam or color and grain difference.

Also, if this is an exterior door, you will have to glue this veneer with an adhesive that will withstand the elements. We recommend either epoxy, type 2 wood glue or urea resin glue. Using any of these three glues requires you to press the veneer under pressure while the adhesive cures. This makes the process more difficult. You can’t use contact cement or peel and stick veneer for this application. It will fail.
