      What is FSC?

The FSC is the "Forest Stewardship Council" an independent, not-for-profit organization

that promotes good forestry practices by certifying the products of timber harvesters.

What is FSC Veneer?
As all of us become more aware of our responsibility to use our forest resources more wisely.  Wood products come from completely renewable resources, provided we use those resources in a way that can sustain the supply by using materials mindfully.   FSC Veneer is material that comes from managed forests that are traceable from the time the logs are cut to the time the final project is installed and are recorded by way of a C.O.C or chain of custody claim on all invoices.  For a finished product to be truly FSC it must be accompanied by a series of C.O.C documents thru the entire process.

What standards do FSC certified woods meet?

Standards are set to protect the forest ecosystem, the forest water quality as well as the wildlife habitats
and biological diversity in question.   You can be confident
that FSC certified wood was harvested with respect
to indigenous people, with the purpose of maintaining the economic and social well being of the local community.

How does FSC monitor international forests?
The FSC engages in regular monitoring and sometimes manages plantations in order to alleviate the
         demand on natural forest.
Would it be better to ban certain tropical species?

No.  Banning really isn't the answer.  A ban reduces the value of standing timber, making it more likely to be clear cut for other purposes like fuel or grazing plots for livestock, and other things not related to the wood furniture or lumber industries.
A ban also reduces the economic incentive to conserve and manage the forests.

What impact does FSC have on forest preservation?

About 2% of all rain forest woods are harvested for the wood veneer and lumber industries.
However, wise stewardship of all forests is an important step in adding value to, and maintaining the natural integrity of the world's tropical forests.

This is the actual information from one of our FSC labels  you will see that will be attached to certain FSC veneers purchased from Oakwood Veneer Co.

How Can you tell that veneer is FSC certified?

All FSC certified wood products will have the appropriate information on the invoice showing the FSC claim.

Things you should know when specifying wood veneer.

As a consumer, designer or fabricator, there are a number of things that can be done to make better use of the resources available.  Understanding that wood is a natural product and that there are visible anomalies or beauty marks in most material, there are many things you can do to make an impact on the environment that will put less stress on a large number of wood species currently in short supply.

FSC certified material is not immune to the natural aspect of wood in general, and infact because of there being less material in the supply chain you will have fewer choices when selecting your veneers.  It is of utmost importance to understand and to try when possible to incorporate the natural beauty that all woods offer to make a positive impact for all of us and for the next generations to come.
